The greatest two-wheel champions and the top representatives of the world XC discipline will compete for the title.

We are very proud to be able to host the UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships on the Island of Elba”, says Niccolò Censi, Coordinator of the Island of Elba Associated Tourism Organisation. “In addition to the sea, the enchanting beaches, the woods and the breathtaking views, the island offers extraordinary biking, mountain biking/e-biking experiences on the over 400 kilometres of cycle paths that have become destinations of choice for bikers from all over the world, both in spring-summer and autumn-winter”.

The ASD Capoliveri Bike Park MTB Club Isola d’Elba will be the Local Organising Committee (LOC) designated by the UCI for the organisation of the world championship and will be aided by all the institutions on the island.

For the 2021 UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships, a spectacular, newly-designed 35 km route, repeated 3 times, has been made through the vegetation, colours and scents of the Mediterranean maquis, on the promontory of Monte Calamita on the south-east of the island, with steep climbs, technical single tracks, fast firebreaks, old mule tracks and dirt roads and the fabulous views and landscape of the area of the Vallone and Polveriera Mines. The track enhances the essence of mountain biking: a true open-air gym for lovers of this sport that consecrates Elba as an elite destination for bikers and outdoor sports enthusiasts from all over the world. International athletes of the calibre of Hector Leonardo Paez, current XCM Marathon champion, Henrique Avancini, the Brazilian champion, star of the XCO Olympic discipline and 2018 World Marathon champion and Samuele Porro and Juri Ragnoli, the most titled Italian champions, who recently had the opportunity to come to the island to test the newly completed route.

The Island of Elba is therefore preparing to become a reference point for mountain bike professionals and for cycling enthusiasts of any level, with trails and ups and downs overlooking the sea and itineraries through mountains and mines; a true tourism, seaside and sports paradise in the Unesco Tuscan Archipelago Man And the Biosphere (MAB) Reserve. The island will be ready to offer an unprecedented event, with a unique formula never proposed before for the Marathon on a track that promises to be the most challenging and spectacular ever.

The routes on Elba open to two wheels, both MTB and road bikes, offer a wide variety to suit every ability. Enthusiasts can try their hand at the many routes or a complete 165 km tour round the island, with a difference in altitude of 4,100 metres.

Thanks to ElbaSmartExploring, a digital mapping project that makes bike and trekking routes throughout the island visible on Google Street View, trails to be tackled can be chosen very easily.

The project began in 2018 as the first systematic digital mapping of a territorial area, experimenting with a number of new features that help plan your excursions, such as the opportunity to choose a path and to be guided using Google Maps, and, with special 360° viewers, to explore the landscape of the island virtually using the Street View application. The mapping now includes bike trails, both for MTB and road bikes, ranging from those for enthusiasts who want to get back in shape, those who want to tour the island on two wheels and families wanting to alternate outdoor activities in the Mediterranean woods with beach life, to those most suitable for professionals looking for more demanding challenges.
